Russian drones hit Kyiv overnight, striking residential tower and transport site; two killed in Sviatoshynskyi high-rise

Russia struck Kyiv with drones on the night of 20–21 October, hitting a 24-storey residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district, a transport infrastructure object in Solomianskyi, and parked cars in Desnianskyi. The Sviatoshynskyi strike caused a fire, partially destroyed an apartment, and killed two people according to later reports; the previous day's attack on Kyiv had already killed one person and injured 21.

Key points

  • Drone struck a 24-storey residential building in Sviatoshynskyi district at the level of the 20th floor, causing a fire of about 70 square metres and partially destroying apartment structures.
  • Casualty toll at the Sviatoshynskyi building is disputed: Kyiv City Military Administration initially reported one killed and one injured, while later reports stated two killed — a 28-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman.
  • In Solomianskyi district, a drone hit a transport infrastructure object, causing a fire; emergency services worked the site.
  • In Desnianskyi district, a drone fell on parked cars, igniting seven vehicles; the 50-square-metre fire was extinguished.
  • Emergency power outages were introduced in Sviatoshynskyi district; other Kyiv districts operated under scheduled outages, with emergency outages also recorded in the Buchanskyi district of Kyiv Oblast.
  • A victim assistance headquarters was being set up at Prospekt Beresteiskyi, 109 in Sviatoshynskyi.
  • On 20 October, a separate Russian attack on Kyiv had already killed one person and injured 21.
  • Mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klychko reported the strikes via Telegram.

Why it matters

The attack struck three districts of the Ukrainian capital in quick succession, hitting a residential high-rise, transport infrastructure and civilian vehicles and triggering fires and emergency power cuts. It came a day after a separate strike on Kyiv had already killed one person and wounded 21, and formed part of a broader overnight barrage of cruise Iskander missiles and 186 strike drones launched across Ukraine. A discrepancy between official casualty figures and later reports of two dead — including a 28-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman — underscores how the human toll from these nightly barrages is still being tallied.

What happened

On the night of 20–21 October 2026, Russia struck Kyiv with drones in what Mayor Vitaliy Klychko reported as the second consecutive night of attacks on the capital. Three districts recorded consequences.

In the Sviatoshynskyi district, a Russian drone hit a 24-storey residential building at the level of the 20th floor. The strike caused a fire covering approximately 70 square metres and partially destroyed the structures of an apartment. Kyiv City Military Administration initially reported one person killed and one injured in the building; later reports stated two people were killed — a 28-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman. Emergency power outages were introduced in the district, and energy crews worked to restore supply.

In the Solomianskyi district, a drone struck a transport infrastructure object, sparking a fire that emergency services worked to contain. In the same district, drone debris also fell on an open area in the non-residential sector, initially without fire. As of around 7 a.m. on 21 October, no casualties had been reported from the Solomianskyi strikes.

In the Desnianskyi district, a drone fell on parked cars in a residential courtyard, igniting seven vehicles. The resulting 50-square-metre fire was extinguished.

A victim assistance headquarters for those affected by the 21 October attack was being set up at Prospekt Beresteiskyi, 109, in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

How Ukrainian sources describe it

Reporting on the strikes came from a wide range of Ukrainian outlets — Ukrinform, Ukrainska Pravda, NV, Suspilne Novyny, Interfax-Ukraine, Liga.net/LB.ua, Radio Svoboda, Hromadske, Novynarnia, Hromadske Radio and ZN.UA — with Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klychko and the Kyiv City Military Administration as the primary sources cited on Telegram. The coverage centred on the impact sites in the three districts, the fires and damage, and the casualty count from the Sviatoshynskyi building, which shifted between one killed and two killed depending on publication time.

Where reporting differs

Sources disagree on the casualty toll from the drone strike on the 24-storey building in the Sviatoshynskyi district. The Kyiv City Military Administration initially reported one person killed and one injured; later reports by NV, Novynarnia, Interfax-Ukraine, Hromadske Radio, Suspilne Novyny and Ukrainska Pravda cited two people killed, identified as a 28-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, with one person injured.

Background

Kyiv had already come under Russian drone fire on 20 October, when a strike on an energy facility in the Shevchenkivskyi district caused outages across the Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Pecherskyi and Solomianskyi districts; that attack killed one person and injured 21, with 12 of the wounded hospitalised. The night's strikes on Kyiv formed part of a wider Russian barrage overnight on 20–21 October in which cruise Iskander missiles and 186 strike drones of various types were launched at Ukraine. Air defence reported engagements at 27 impact locations and debris falling at 13 other locations, with 150 UAVs reported neutralised.
