Key points

  • The attack began at 18:00 on October 19 and involved 165 strike drones, including 105 jet-propelled types.
  • By 08:00 on October 20, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 115 drones, including 73 jet-propelled types.

Why it matters

This was one of the largest single-night drone attacks documented during the war. The deaths and injuries show the continued danger to civilians, while damage to energy infrastructure creates risks for electricity and heating as the cold season approaches.

What happened

Starting at 18:00 on October 19, Russian forces launched 165 strike drones from directions including Russia, temporarily occupied Donetsk, occupied Crimea and the Sea of Azov. The attack included Shahed, S8000 Banderole/Dan-T, Gerbera and Parodiya decoy drones. Ukrainian aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups responded. By 08:00, 115 drones had been shot down or suppressed, and at 08:15 about 20 attack drones were still airborne. Hits were recorded at 30 locations, with debris falling at 13 sites. In Kyiv region, a production and warehouse building in Obukhiv district was hit, killing three people and injuring six. In Izium, five people were injured and residential and civilian infrastructure was damaged. Energy facilities were damaged in Ternopil and Odesa regions, with power disruptions reported in some districts.

How Ukrainian sources describe it

Ukrainian sources focused on the coordination of air-defense assets and the civilian consequences of the attack. The head of the Ternopil Regional Military Administration, Taras Pastukh, described the strikes as a deliberate attempt to disable energy infrastructure and leave residents without electricity and heat. Reporting also detailed the drone types, launch directions and the high proportion of jet-propelled drones.

Background

The attack used a mixture of Shahed, S8000 Banderole/Dan-T and Gerbera drones, along with Parodiya decoys. Drones were launched from Orel, Kursk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, temporarily occupied Donetsk, Chauda and Gvardiiske in occupied Crimea, and the Sea of Azov. Lower-confidence reports also mentioned impacts in Khmelnytskyi, Lviv, Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
