Ukrainian Insurgent Army

The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was a paramilitary formation that fought on Ukrainian territory during the Second World War and in the years that followed. Established in 1942 by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), it carried out armed actions against the German occupiers as well as against Soviet forces and Polish military units in the region. After the war, UPA units continued guerrilla operations in forests of western Ukraine into the mid-1950s. The army's legacy remains a contested subject in Ukraine and in relations with neighbouring countries, especially Poland.
