Why it matters

The daily and cumulative figures from Ukraine's General Staff are the primary official tracker of Russian losses in the war. They provide a near-real-time read on the intensity of the fighting and the attrition of Russian forces, while remaining preliminary and subject to revision. The scale of cumulative losses reported, particularly the 564,897 UAVs lost since the invasion began, reflects the central role of drone warfare in the conflict.

What happened

On 15 October 2026, Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces issued its daily update on Russian military losses. The report stated that over the previous day, Ukrainian Defence Forces had killed and wounded 1,880 Russian personnel. Russia's cumulative personnel losses since 24 February 2022 were estimated at approximately 1,559,230.

The daily equipment tally included 2 armored combat vehicles, 38 artillery systems, 4 multiple launch rocket systems, 3 air defense systems, 4 ground robotic complexes, 1,308 operational-tactical level UAVs, 4 cruise missiles, 535 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, and 2 units of special equipment. No daily change was reported for tanks, aircraft, helicopters, ships and boats, or submarines.

Cumulative equipment losses since the start of the full-scale invasion were reported as 12,414 tanks, 25,537 armored combat vehicles, 51,233 artillery systems, 2,216 MLRS, 1,707 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,955 ground robotic complexes, 564,897 operational-tactical UAVs, 5,130 cruise missiles, 35 ships and boats, 2 submarines, 163,324 vehicles and fuel tankers, and 4,830 units of special equipment.

The General Staff also reported that 222 combat clashes occurred on the front as of 22:00 on 14 October. Russian forces carried out one missile strike and 85 air strikes over the course of the day, dropping 278 guided aerial bombs. The figures were explicitly noted as preliminary and subject to clarification.

How Ukrainian sources describe it

All eight Ukrainian media and news agency sources present the General Staff figures as the authoritative measure of Russian losses. Coverage focuses on the daily 1,880 personnel loss and the cumulative total of approximately 1,559,230 since the start of the full-scale invasion. Ukrainian outlets highlight the large UAV loss figure (1,308 in one day, 564,897 cumulatively) as a marker of the conflict's character. Each source notes explicitly that the published data are preliminary and being clarified by the General Staff.

Where reporting differs

Sources differ on two figures within the General Staff's own data. The cumulative total of Russian air defense losses is given as 1,707 with a +3 daily change in some Ukrainian outlets and as 1,704 without a daily figure in others. The cumulative total of motor vehicles and fuel tankers is given as 163,324 (+535) in some outlets and as 162,324 (+535) in others. The number of combat clashes on 14 October is given as 222 (as of 22:00) in one article and as 260 over the full day in another, reflecting different reporting cutoffs rather than a substantive disagreement.

Background

Independent investigations and NATO estimates place Russian losses at significantly lower figures than the General Staff's tally. A joint investigation by BBC Russian Service and Mediazona published on 9 October established that at least 276,113 Russian military personnel have been killed since the start of the full-scale invasion, based on names confirmed through open sources; the authors note that the real figure may be much higher and cite NATO estimates of up to half a million. A 1 July study by the U.S. Center for Strategic and International Studies found that combined Russian and Ukrainian killed and wounded losses exceeded two million since February 2022. Russia last officially acknowledged its own casualty figure in September 2022, when it cited 5,937 dead. Kyiv withheld Ukrainian casualty figures for a long time and has since released them intermittently through President Zelenskyy, who stated on 23 September 2026 that Russia's total losses since the start of the war reached 1.6 million, of whom approximately 700,000 were killed, and acknowledged on 30 July that at least 50,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed with around 400,000 wounded.
