What happened

From 18:00 on Friday, October 2, Russia attacked Ukraine with 157 strike drones — 45 of them jet-powered — comprising Shahed-type UAVs, Gerbera drones, and Parodia decoy drones. They were launched from Bryansk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, temporarily occupied Donetsk, and Hvardiiske in temporarily occupied Crimea. Ukrainian air defense — including aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces — engaged the incoming targets. As of 09:00 on Saturday, October 3, preliminary figures showed 131 of the 131 enemy drones had been shot down or suppressed. The air force recorded direct hits at 12 locations and debris from downed targets at 5 more. Earlier in the night, a reactive drone struck the Pivdennyi (Northern) Bridge in Kyiv, damaging the road surface and contact networks and closing traffic toward the right bank. In Hostomel, Kyiv Oblast, fires broke out at two warehouses and were extinguished; four people, including a child, were injured in the attack. Late in the evening, a multi-story building and a business center in Dnipro were hit, injuring four women aged 55, 62, 77, and 88. In Kharkiv, a drone hit near a private house in the Kyivskyi district, damaging a gas pipeline and injuring three people. In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, a fire-rescue unit was hit during a call-out, injuring one rescuer. In Odesa Oblast, a private house and a non-residential building were damaged, with no casualties reported. On the morning of October 3, Russia additionally struck Odesa Oblast with Banderol-type loitering munitions; the consequences of that strike were still being determined. As of the time of reporting, several enemy UAVs remained airborne and the attack was still ongoing.

Where reporting differs

Sources disagree on the number of children injured in the Hostomel attack. Most reports say one child was among the four injured; one variant states two of the four were children.

Background

Ukraine's air defense routinely combines aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups to counter mass drone attacks. Russia has increasingly used decoy drones such as the Parodia type alongside strike drones to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense and deplete interceptor capacity.
