Background
TANECO is one of Russia's five largest oil refineries, with a design capacity of more than 16 million tonnes of crude oil per year, producing diesel fuel, aviation kerosene for fighter jets, and automobile gasoline. The neighbouring TAIF-NK refinery processes more than 7 million tonnes of oil and gas condensate a year and supplies gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products to the Russian domestic market and for the needs of the Russian occupation army. Nizhnekamskneftekhim, part of the Sibur petrochemical holding, is one of the largest petrochemical enterprises in Europe and effectively a monopoly producer in Russia for many types of synthetic rubber and plastics. According to the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces, in August 2026 a successful strike on TANECO was reported. At the start of July, a Ukrainian strike drone fell on the territory of TAIF-NK in the Nizhnekamsk industrial zone. On 10 August, drones attacked Nizhnekamsk, where the oil refinery is located.
