Kyiv gunfight between SBU and GUR exposes infighting in Ukraine's wartime security services
Two shooting incidents in Kyiv's Dnipro district on the night of September 1 and the morning of September 2, 2026, pitted officers of the SBU and military intelligence (GUR) against each other, leaving three GUR servicemen wounded. The clash was tied to the disputed August 23 detention of Russian Volunteer Corps deputy commander Stepan Kaplunov. One officer from each service was notified of criminal suspicion, courts imposed personal-surety measures, and President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the dismissal of deputies at both agencies.
