Trump strikes Russian diesel deal with Putin, attacks Zelensky and tells Ukraine to pick a new leader
On 9 October 2026, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and announced an agreement for between 300,000 and 3 million tons of Russian diesel fuel to be supplied to US and world markets. The Kremlin lifted a diesel-export ban imposed in July 2026, and the US Treasury issued a general licence authorising Russian-origin diesel transactions through 7 April 2027. Trump then publicly attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying it was "time for Ukraine to choose a new president" and accusing him of being able to end the war but choosing not to. Elon Musk backed Trump on X, writing that "Zelensky has gone too far" and agreeing it was time for Ukraine to get a new leader.
