Trump's Russian diesel deal draws bipartisan Senate pushback and European criticism
On October 9, US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Russian diesel fuel to US and global markets, framed by Trump as a step to lower US fuel prices. The US Treasury followed with General License No. 135 permitting Russian diesel imports until April 7, 2027. Trump also publicly urged Ukraine to choose a new leader and pushed Kyiv to stop strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, while announcing an "energy ceasefire" limited to oil refineries on October 11. Russia continued striking Ukraine after the deal, while the Kremlin confirmed Putin would not currently negotiate with Kyiv. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the agreement a "very risky decision" on October 14, a bipartisan group of 12 US senators demanded its cancellation, and the EU summit was expected to express regret over the deal.
