Rafael Grossi
Rafael Grossi is an Argentine diplomat and nuclear affairs specialist who has served as Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since December 2019. He previously served as Argentina's ambassador to Austria and held senior positions within the IAEA Secretariat, including as head of the Office for Disarmament Affairs. Grossi is recognized for his work on nuclear non-proliferation and safety, including his involvement in the Iran nuclear issue. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he has repeatedly visited the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, mediating efforts to secure the facility.

IAEA-brokered local ceasefire takes effect around Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant to restore power line
A local ceasefire brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) between Ukraine and Russia took effect on 5 September 2026 around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), allowing Ukrainian specialists to begin repairing a damaged power transmission line and restoring off-site electricity to the facility. The plant has been running on emergency diesel generators since 20 August, and IAEA warned that fuel reserves are running low.
