Ukraine's UN envoy cites rising civilian toll at emergency Security Council meeting
Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN Andriy Melnyk addressed an emergency UN Security Council meeting on October 9, citing UN figures of more than 2,200 civilians killed and over 13,000 injured in Ukraine in the first eight months of 2026 — a 55% increase over the same period the previous year. He called on Council members to back a resolution forcing Russia to end the war and withdraw its troops, and the session also referenced a recent Russian missile strike on Pryluky and the rescue of a 5-year-old girl named Zoryana.
