Hungary to keep granting protection to Ukrainian men of conscription age despite new EU rules
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that Hungary will continue granting asylum or temporary protection to Ukrainian men of conscription age who flee to Hungary, primarily ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia. The move defies an EU measure, in force since 5 August, that restricts temporary protection for newly arrived Ukrainian men with problems in their military registration documents. Hungary voted against that EU measure, and the European Commission said on 4 September that it had not received formal written notification from Budapest of any intention to diverge from the rules.
