Luc Frieden
Luc Frieden is a Luxembourgish politician and leader of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV). He has served as Prime Minister of Luxembourg since 2023, following his party's victory in the parliamentary elections that year. Before becoming prime minister, he was Luxembourg's Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2013 and previously a Member of the European Parliament with the European People's Party group.

EU extends Ukraine sanctions 36 months but drops two Russian oligarchs; Ukraine protests and names replacement targets
On 22 September 2026, the EU Council extended its Ukraine-related sanctions regime for an unprecedented 36 months (until September 2029) while simultaneously removing Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the list. Ukraine condemned the delisting as "shameful and unjustified" and proposed adding Vladimir Lisin and Vladimir Potanin to the next package instead. Several member states announced national sanctions to keep pressure on the two men.
