Kim Jong Un is the supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), serving as chairman of the State Affairs Commission and general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea. He assumed power in 2011 following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, becoming the third generation of his family to rule the country. He has presided over the expansion of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes and has held summits with the leaders of the United States, South Korea and China.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent Vladimir Putin a message pledging to expand and deepen cooperation with Russia across all areas and expressing confidence in Russia's victory in what he called a "sacred war." The message, sent on Monday via the state news agency KCNA, was a response to Putin's congratulatory letter on North Korea's 78th founding anniversary.
