Ivan Mazepa
Ivan Mazepa (1639–1709) was a Ukrainian Cossack military and political leader, Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host from 1687 to 1709. He led the Hetmanate after the partition of the Cossack lands under the 1667 Andrusovo truce and sought to preserve its autonomy as Russian influence grew. In 1708 he sided with Charles XII of Sweden during the Great Northern War; the defeat at Poltava in 1709 ended his political project and led to a long-lasting vilification in Russian imperial and Soviet tradition.
