Rubio: diplomatic end to Russia–Ukraine war currently "unattainable"; Zelensky pushes back
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the Greek newspaper Kathimerini that ending the war through negotiations is currently "unattainable," describing the conflict as a "strategic deadlock" that can be exited only through talks or escalation. He attributed the impasse to Russia's demand for full control of the Donbas, which Ukraine rejects. President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking from Pryluky the day after a Russian missile killed 22 people in a residential building, rejected Rubio's characterization and called on Washington to step up sanctions and economic pressure on Russia. Zelensky also announced that Ukrainian negotiators will travel to the United States on 9–10 October for talks with the American side.
