Daniel Fried is an American diplomat and foreign policy specialist known for his work on U.S. policy toward the post-Soviet states and Eastern Europe. He served as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs and as the State Department's Coordinator for Sanctions Policy. He also served as U.S. Ambassador to Poland.

U.S. House passes sweeping Russia sanctions bill with up to 100% tariffs on top buyers of Russian energy
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026' on September 16 (night of September 17 Kyiv time), with 262 votes in favor and 159 against. The bill imposes broad sanctions on Russian officials, banks, energy companies, and the shadow fleet, and authorizes the president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that are top buyers of Russian oil and gas. It now goes to President Donald Trump, who plans to sign it.
