Trump agrees Russian diesel deal with Putin, then announces "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine
On 9 October, US President Donald Trump announced during a phone call with Vladimir Putin an agreement to supply between 300,000 and 3 million tonnes of Russian diesel fuel to American and world markets, and the US Treasury issued a temporary general licence suspending related sanctions for six months. Two days later Trump declared an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine, claimed to begin immediately. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the US decision weak and said it played into Russia's hands; Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas also criticised the arrangement, while Zelensky said at the Warsaw Security Forum that Russia had violated the ceasefire almost immediately by striking a power station in Kharkiv.
