Benito Mussolini
Benito Mussolini was an Italian politician and the founder of the National Fascist Party, who ruled Italy as dictator from 1922 to 1943 under the title of Duce. He established a one-party totalitarian state, suppressed opposition, and reorganized the economy and society along corporatist lines. His foreign policy led to the invasion of Ethiopia, intervention in the Spanish Civil War, and Italy's entry into World War II as part of the Axis with Nazi Germany. After the Allied invasion of Sicily and a vote of the Fascist Grand Council, he was arrested in 1943 and executed by Italian partisans in April 1945. His regime remains a defining example of twentieth-century fascism.
