Angela Merkel
Angela Merkel is a German politician who served as Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021, the first woman to hold the office and one of the longest-serving chancellors in the country's postwar history. She led the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for nearly two decades and shaped German policy on European integration, migration, and the energy transition. Before becoming chancellor, she served in the cabinet of Helmut Kohl and later as minister in a SPD-led government. Since leaving office she has largely stepped back from frontline politics.
