Meloni calls Trump–Putin diesel deal 'very risky' as US licenses Russian fuel imports
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has publicly criticised a 9 October understanding between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply hundreds of thousands of tons of Russian diesel to US and global markets, calling it a "very risky" decision. The deal was accompanied by a US Treasury license authorising Russian-diesel transactions through 7 April 2027 and a separate "energy ceasefire" limited to refinery strikes. The Kremlin confirmed shortly after the announcement that Putin will not currently negotiate with Ukraine, and Russia continued striking Ukrainian energy and water infrastructure ahead of winter.
