Ahatanhel Krymsky
Ahatanhel Krymsky was a Ukrainian orientalist, historian, writer and translator, regarded as one of the founders of academic Oriental studies in Ukraine. He was a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and produced extensive works on the history, philology and culture of the peoples of the East. In the 1920s he directed the Kyiv Institute of Oriental Studies and took part in building the Ukrainian system of higher education. He was arrested and exiled during the Stalinist repressions, and for decades his name was erased from official scholarship in the Soviet Union.

Russian drone strikes National Academy of Sciences building in central Kyiv
On 28 September, a Russian jet drone directly hit the Presidium building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district, causing a large fire. At least one woman was killed and several others were injured, with reports of further fatalities still being clarified. President Zelensky said Ukraine would respond, and the strike was part of a broader day of Russian drone attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
