Russian drone strikes SBU headquarters in central Kyiv, targeting acting chief's office
On 4 September, a Russian drone struck the central building of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) on Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv, opposite Saint Sophia Cathedral. The drone was aimed at the office of acting SBU head Oleksandr Poklad, who was not in the building at the time. President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly ordered a 'mirror' response, and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called the strike a serious escalation timed against renewed peace efforts.

On 4 September 2026, a Russian drone struck the central building of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) on Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv, opposite Saint Sophia Cathedral. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the drone was directed at the office of acting SBU head Oleksandr Poklad, who was not injured. The blast wave damaged the 18th-century Consistorial House of the Saint Sophia national reserve and destroyed the nearby Zavertaylo restaurant.
