Trump announces Russian diesel deal after Putin call; Zelensky calls it "a birthday gift for Putin"
On October 9, US President Donald Trump announced by phone with Vladimir Putin an agreement to supply several million tons of Russian diesel fuel to the US and global markets, prompting the Treasury to issue an immediate OFAC general license temporarily lifting the relevant sanctions. The announcement came as Ukrainian and American delegations were meeting in Miami with European diplomats to discuss ending the war. President Volodymyr Zelensky sharply criticized the move as "unfair and dishonest," a sign of "obvious weakness," and "a birthday gift for Putin," while a senior Ukrainian official told the Financial Times that Kyiv "will burn [Russian] oil refineries."
