Russia launches major new wave of strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure
Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported to Vladimir Putin on 16 October that Russia had begun a campaign of massive strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the overnight attack of 16–17 October was one of the largest on the grid to date, hitting more than 15 important electricity generation and transmission facilities across multiple oblasts with more than 320 Shahed drones plus cruise and ballistic missiles. The strikes came days after US President Donald Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" that Ukraine said it had agreed to only conditionally, and after Zelensky lifted a self-imposed ban on Ukrainian strikes against Russian oil refineries.
