It is headed by the Secretary of Energy, a Cabinet-level position. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C.

During a 20 September phone call, US President Donald Trump repeatedly asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, citing rising global diesel prices. Zelenskyy said Ukraine would halt such strikes only if Russia stops attacking Ukrainian energy, critical infrastructure and food exports, with partner guarantees. The call preceded a planned in-person meeting on 22 September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
