UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture
The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) is the body established in 2006 under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture to carry out the protocol's preventive function. It consists of independent experts who conduct unannounced visits to places of detention in states parties, engage confidentially with their authorities and publish reports with recommendations aimed at preventing ill-treatment before it occurs. Although created as a subsidiary of the Committee against Torture, it operates independently of treaty-body reporting cycles and is the only UN body with this preventive mandate.
