Merz visits Kyiv, announces over €1.3 billion in aid and 15 agreements worth €8.5 billion
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on 4 October on an unannounced visit, accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and business leaders from the German defense and energy sectors. At a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Merz announced a new German support package of more than €1.3 billion — about €1 billion for the military and around €350 million for Ukraine's energy sector ahead of winter — and 15 bilateral agreements with a combined stated value of more than €8.5 billion. Air-raid sirens went off several times during the visit and a Russian drone hit Kyiv's Northern Bridge on the morning of 4 October.
