Trump announces deal to allow Russian diesel exports; Ukraine and European allies condemn the move
On 9 October 2026, US President Donald Trump announced an agreement reached in a phone call with Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel fuel to American and global markets. The US Treasury immediately issued a general licence authorising the imports, which EU and Ukrainian officials called a unilateral concession that would finance Russia's war. EU foreign ministers said they would approve a new sanctions package on 12 October, and the UK, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Latvia all confirmed they would maintain their own sanctions on Russia.
