German Chancellor Merz arrives in Kyiv on unannounced solidarity visit, pledges drone interceptors and long-range weapons
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on 4 October on an unannounced visit, accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and about ten business leaders from the defense and energy sectors. He said Ukraine needs Germany's full support in the coming weeks and warned that if Russia is not stopped, its war machine will eventually turn against Europe. According to government sources, Berlin plans to release around 1 billion euros for long-range weapons production and an additional 350 million euros to repair and rebuild destroyed power plants, and to deliver thousands of interceptor drones to counter jet-powered Russian combat drones.
