Ukraine's Special Operations Forces (SOF)
The Special Operations Forces (SSO) of Ukraine are a separate branch of the Ukrainian Armed Forces responsible for conducting special operations, including reconnaissance, direct-action raids, counter-terrorism and strikes against high-value targets deep in enemy-held territory. They are subordinated directly to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The SSO were established as a separate command in 2016, though Ukraine had previously maintained special-purpose units within other branches of its military. They have played a prominent role in operations during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including long-range strikes against targets inside Russia and on occupied territory.
