U.S. Republican Party
The Republican Party, commonly known as the GOP, is one of the two major political parties in the United States, founded in 1854. It generally promotes conservative and right-leaning policies, including free-market economics, limited government, and a strong national defense. Along with the Democratic Party, it forms the backbone of the American two-party system and competes at the federal, state, and local levels.

Trump suspends sanctions under "Graham Law" two days before Russia deadline
On 16 October 2026, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order invoking a waiver in the so-called "Graham Law" to suspend the application of new sanctions, restrictions and tariffs against Russia, just two days before they were due to take effect. The order formally establishes the law's tariffs but simultaneously holds them in abeyance, while pre-existing US sanctions against Russia remain in force. The move follows Trump's 9 October announcement of a deal with Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel fuel to US and world markets, and comes as his administration seeks to lower US diesel prices ahead of the 3 November midterm elections.
