The Left
The Left (German: Die Linke) is a German left-wing political party formed in 2007 through the merger of the Party of Democratic Socialism, the successor to the Socialist Unity Party of Germany that ruled East Germany, and a left-wing faction that broke away from the Social Democratic Party. The party holds democratic socialist and anti-capitalist positions and is represented in the Bundestag and several state parliaments. In Saxony-Anhalt it has long been one of the stronger regional forces and has taken part in coalition governments.
