Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (SSO) are a separate branch of Ukraine's military under the direct command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Their role is to conduct special operations in the defence sphere, including reconnaissance, counter-intelligence, counter-terrorism and direct action behind enemy lines. Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion the SSO have been involved in operations on Ukrainian territory and behind enemy lines, including missions involving prisoners of war. The force is built from both professional military personnel and volunteers.
