The Bureau of Political-Military Affairs is the U.S. State Department office responsible for coordinating U.S. foreign policy on defense and security issues, including the transfer and sale of military equipment, arms, and defense services to foreign partners. It plays a central role in reviewing and approving major foreign military sales under the Foreign Assistance Act and the Arms Export Control Act. The bureau is led by an Assistant Secretary of State.

US State Department approves possible $2.68 billion air defense sale to Ukraine
The US State Department approved a possible sale of air defense modernization equipment and related services to Ukraine at an estimated cost of $2.68 billion. If finalized, the deal would be financed through a combination of European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing funds allocated under the previous administration. The package includes missiles, mobile launchers, radar stations, and logistics support, but not Patriot systems. Congressional review is still required.
