Social Democratic Party (SPD)
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is one of the country's major political parties, founded in 1863. It is ideologically aligned with European social democracy and is a member of the Socialist International and the Party of European Socialists. The SPD has long been a dominant force in German politics, with its chancellors — Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt, and Gerhard Schröder — shaping significant periods of postwar West Germany and reunified Germany. It currently participates in a grand coalition with the CDU/CSU and contests both state and federal elections.
