Sberbank

Sberbank, officially branded as Sber, is the largest bank in Russia, controlled by the state through the Russian Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Russia. Founded in 1841 as a savings institution, it grew into a universal financial group serving retail, corporate and government clients. After a 2007 reform and the 2008–2009 financial crisis, the bank underwent a major modernization under CEO Herman Gref. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Sberbank was placed under international sanctions and cut off from SWIFT by Western operators.
