Russian Armed Forces' Southern Military District
Russia's Southern Military District (Yuzhny Voyenny Okrug) is one of the five operational-strategic commands of the Russian Armed Forces, responsible for the southern part of European Russia. Its area of responsibility covers the Southern Federal District and parts of the North Caucasus Federal District, including Rostov, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, as well as Crimea, Sevastopol and Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. The district headquarters is located in Rostov-on-Don. Following the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it has served as the primary Russian grouping commanding operations on the southern axis of the war, including the occupied parts of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts.
