Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN)
The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) is a Ukrainian political organization founded in 1929 in Vienna by émigré intellectuals and former soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic. It operated as an underground movement committed to establishing an independent Ukrainian state, and during the Second World War its armed wing fought against both German and Soviet occupation. In 1940 the group split into OUN(M) led by Andriy Melnyk and OUN(B) led by Stepan Bandera. Insurgent units associated with the OUN continued armed resistance against Soviet rule in western Ukraine into the early 1950s.
