Order of the White Eagle

The Order of the White Eagle is Poland's oldest and highest state decoration, established in 1705 by King Augustus II as an order of merit open to both military and civilian recipients. It continued to be awarded within the Russian Empire after the partitions of Poland. Readopted in 1921 by the recreated Polish state and reconstituted in 1992, it is now the senior Polish order, bestowed both to Polish citizens of the highest distinction and to foreign heads of state.
