German military

The Bundeswehr is the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany, comprising the Army (Heer), Navy (Marine) and Air Force (Luftwaffe). Founded in 1955 as West Germany joined NATO during the Cold War, it serves as the country's contribution to the Alliance's collective defence. After reunification, Germany suspended conscription and the Bundeswehr became a professional force, remaining one of the largest militaries in Europe.
