UK to introduce GCSE qualification in Ukrainian, with first exams in 2029
The UK will introduce a GCSE qualification in Ukrainian, with teaching due to begin in England in September 2028 and the first examinations in 2029. The exam will be open to all pupils and also available in Wales and Northern Ireland, offering Ukrainian students an alternative to being pushed toward Russian because no Ukrainian-language GCSE existed. The British government has apologised to affected Ukrainian children and funded the qualification’s development through a £340,000 grant to AQA.
