Lithuania to push EU for ban on transit of Russian grain through bloc's territory
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius announced on 8 October that Lithuania will propose to the European Union a ban on the transit of Russian grain through EU territory, and will also propose adding Russian agricultural oligarchs who support the war to the EU sanctions list. Lithuania has ordered stronger domestic checks on grain transiting the country, while Estonia already banned such transit from 1 October and Latvia has imposed border controls and announced 300% duties on grain from Russia and Belarus. The initiative is coordinated with the other Baltic states, whose leaders have written to EU institutional heads calling for an EU-wide ban.
