EU extends Ukraine-related sanctions three years, but removes Usmanov and Fridman from list
EU ambassadors reached a preliminary agreement on 22 September to extend EU sanctions against persons responsible for undermining Ukraine's territorial integrity for 36 months, until 22 September 2029 — the first multi-year renewal of the regime rather than the customary six months. As part of the compromise, Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman were removed from the list. Latvia, the only member state to oppose the delisting until the end, abstained rather than veto, then announced it will impose its own national sanctions against both men. Ukraine's foreign minister called the delisting "shameful and unjustified," while President Zelensky thanked Latvia for holding out.
