Schröder joins Putin for 74th birthday in Moscow, drawing German political backlash
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder travelled to Moscow and celebrated Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday with him on 7 October, according to Kremlin-released photos. The visit drew sharp criticism from senior German politicians — including Chancellor Friedrich Merz — who called the meeting shameful and a betrayal of Europe. It also surfaced Schröder's new role on the supervisory board of the Russian subsidiary of German retailer Globus.
