Hungarian Revolution of 1956
The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was a nationwide uprising against the communist regime and Soviet rule in Hungary, beginning on 23 October 1956 in Budapest with a student demonstration. A new cabinet under Nagy Imre was formed, which announced Hungary's withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact and declared neutrality. On 4 November Soviet forces invaded to crush the revolt; Nagy and other leaders were later executed or imprisoned. The revolution remains a defining symbol of resistance to communist rule and is commemorated each year on 23 October as a national holiday in Hungary.
