Hungary says it will keep granting protection to Ukrainian men of military age despite new EU rules
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that Hungary will continue to grant temporary protection and asylum to Ukrainian men of conscription age who flee to Hungary, primarily ethnic Hungarians from Ukraine's Transcarpathia (Zakarpattia) region. The move defies new EU rules, in force since 5 August, that condition temporary protection for newly arriving military-age Ukrainian men on having no problems with their military registration documents. Hungary voted against the EU measure, and Magyar said he raised the issue with European Council President António Costa during Costa's 2 September visit to Budapest.
