Human Rights Council
The Human Rights Council is the United Nations body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Established in 2006, it is headquartered in Geneva and comprises 47 member states elected by the UN General Assembly for three-year terms. Its main mechanisms include the Universal Periodic Review, special rapporteurs and investigative bodies set up in connection with conflicts and crisis situations.

UN reports over 15,000 Ukrainian civilian casualties in first eight months of 2026
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk told the Human Rights Council in Geneva that the UN has verified more than 15,000 civilian deaths and injuries in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026, a 55% increase over the same period in 2025. July 2026 was the deadliest month for civilians since May 2022.
