Group of Seven
The Group of Seven (G7) is an intergovernmental forum of seven major advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, joined by representatives of the European Union. It originated in 1975 from an initiative of French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing to coordinate economic and financial policy among the leading Western industrialized nations in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis. Its agenda has since broadened to include security, climate change, energy, global health and international stability. The G7 holds annual summits under a rotating presidency, and operates without a permanent secretariat or a founding treaty.
