G8
The G8 (Group of Eight) was an informal intergovernmental forum comprising eight major industrialised nations: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. It originated in 1997 when Russia was admitted to the existing G7, and member states held annual summits to coordinate on global economic, political and security issues. Russia was effectively excluded from the group in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea and intervention in eastern Ukraine; the format has remained suspended since then, while the G7 continues to operate.
